I had a very nice Valentine's Day. Candy, cards, flowers, booze, a gourmet dinner prepared for me . . . all provided by my sweetie, the deity. Thanks, sweet cheeks! You're awesome.
But I have to admit I have mixed feelings about Valentine's Day. I mean, it's basically a totally commercialized holiday designed to guilt people into buying unnecessary fluff-stuff for people who might cry if they don't.
(You could, of course, take a moral stand, and not succumb to the external commercial pressure. Your sweetie might understand. And I hear make-up sex can be hot. Still, it's a risk I wouldn't take.)
And what if you don't, at present, have a sweetie? Gaaah. Then you feel even worse on Valentine's Day.
On the other hand . . . chocolate.
Okay, chocolate wins. (Chocolate always wins.)
Bonus: All that Valentine's Day candy is half price today. Sweetie or not, half-price chocolate rocks!
But wherever you come down on the VD conundrum . . .

I like Valentine's Day, commercial or not. I like having the excuse to spoil people I love when I otherwise would have found more practical things to do with the budget. Plus, half-priced chocolate! Really, I don't see the down side. Well, except that the nearest Godiva boutique is too far away, but that's more a general problem than a VD problem.
Anyway, the camel is gorgeous. Doubtless she has a caravan following her every move.
not a huge fan of Vday. unless the gifts i get are homeade. call me cheap (i prefer frugal) but i hate the idea of someone spending half the mortgage on flowers simply because the greeting card companies say you should. hello? that money could be better spent elsewhere.
although...my boyfriend in college had the right idea. he knew i hated the commercialization of V-day so he used to steal flowers from his mom's greenhouse for me. theft. now, that's romantic ;)

I have always loved Valentine's Day. I love to celebrate love, in all its forms. For the naysayers, I suggest looking at it from a place of an excuse to SHOW/express love (rather than receiving) and one can do so for free.
It doesn't have to be 'sweetheart' love...it could be friend(s), pet, parent, child, a stranger (RAK), a sick child, a lonely elderly neighbor, a homeless person...a cause, non-profit, etc. Certainly we can all find SOMEONE or something we love, even if only in a meta/humanity sense. (if not, then, dude, that naysayer has bigger problems than not liking Valentine's Day)
Valentine's is a lovely excuse/reminder to share some love. You can make a card. Pick a flower. Make cookies, divide a plant to share, donate time, whatever.
My point is, even when I was single on V-day, I still loved giving cards and Hershey Kisses to my friends and teachers and neighbors and a little treat to my pets. (I still do all those things)

I'm not a huge fan of making a big hoopla over ANY day just because it falls on a certain date on the calendar. Saying, "I love you" because it's Valentine's Day is nice, but it means more to me if it's said when I'm scrubbing the floor in the middle of an ordinary day when I look like something the cat dragged in. Now, THAT'S love! That aside, I (ahem) never turn down the chocolates. (Wouldn't want to hurt his feelings, ya know.)
Hubby knows I don't get wound up about "occasions" like Valentine's Day, and I wouldn't have a problem with skipping the whole thing.
Somehow, that makes it even sweeter when he always gets me flowers and a card and nice meal. He knows he doesn't have to, and he does anyway.
He's definitely a keeper. :-)

Sometimes I feel bad for the poor, humiliated camels in your pictures. Then I laugh. But I still feel bad.
As a (happy) singleton, it's no big deal to me one way or the other. I bought a bag of pink and red Hershey's Kisses. And no one else will eat them.
I like Valentine's Day but that's only because I have the luxury of liking it or not because I do have a sweetie.
BUT if I were single, I'd say Pah, who cares. Lame holiday. :)
I manage to avoid to much trouble around refusing to participate in Valentine's Day by buying the occasional 'un-Valentine's' Day present.

i typically don't like valentine's day b/c i too feel that the commercialization has taken over... but after reading through these comments and after spending the evening with a friend and bottles of wine, the TRUE point of valentine's was revealed to me.
LOVE. all kinds of it. and SHOWING it to those you care about.
it reminded me of my mom and how she used to make our holiday lunches extra special: all red for valentine's day. all green for st. patty's day. pastel for easter. black/orange for halloween. it was fun and silly and made me feel loved and so i guess you could say this grinch's heart has grown three sizes. i'm on board for spreading the love.
My husband and I declared a Valentine's Day truce. We've torn up our kitchen, installed a new floor, and we're currently living with out a functioning kitchen sink until the new counter tops are installed.
We can't afford chocolate, flowers, or little teddy bears holding a fake balloon. ;)
We don't make a hug hoopla but usually plan an event around a holiday. Rarely on it except for Christmas. Too darn hard to go anywhere like restaurants. We do a day close to the day and that's about it.
