I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas

Okay, embarrassing confession time:

My all time favorite Christmas song? "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas." What can I say? I listened to it when I was a tot, and was hooked for life.

A few years ago I finally got one! Here--I'll drag it out and show you. (Wow. Bet you're glad you checked out my blog today, aren't you?)

I even tried to match the look on the face of the little girl on the album cover. Don't think I quite nailed it. She is, perhaps, more wistful. Or sincere. Maybe more prayerful. She looks, I dunnoh, more concerned than I do. Probably because she doesn't have her hippo yet.

Whatever. I was very concerned for that girl every year when the Christmas music came out of the closet. I worried she wouldn't get her hippo, the way I never got my horse. (I, um, got over it. In case you're wondering.)

Alas, not everyone I know would be happy with a hippo (go figure), so I have to brave the retail jungle. If you never see me again, you'll know I was devoured the Great Big Retail Monster.

I'll leave you the hippo song to remember me by. Feel free to listen to it over and over and over again.

Really. It'll grow on you, I promise.

I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME!!! I love that song. Esp when she sings "rhinocerousouses" ;-)

Hubby and I were listening to Christmas music yesterday while painting our kitchen table and chairs, and we had a running commentary on what songs we liked and didn't like. He finally asked me if I even liked Christmas at all. :D

My kids love that song! Well, thay did last year. They're nine now. Possibly far too mature for something like that. Yanno, until they hit their 30's and everything that became stupid when you were a teen turns back into the coolest thing that ever happened. I'm totally rambling today...sorry.

Shopping huh? I hope to see you blogging again someday - if you make it ;)

I have never heard that song before! Man, what a deprived childhood I have had!

Got your package in the mail this weekend. Well, got it when I walked in the door at 3am this morning. So it certainly brightened up my day :) Thanks again!

Too funny! I think the look on your face says "I'm not a serial killer, I swear--see, I have a purple hippo..."

Oh, you evil, evil woman! Now that song is in my head! Like forever! I love the Shirley Temple version!

"and only a hippopotamus will do..." maybe that's why I'm always disappointed with life's gifts. I think they have to be what I want them to be. Profound, dude. Thanks for the moment of insight :)

That is all.

Bahaha I love this post!!!!

I thought I was the only one who loved the song until this year! I was listening to a station here in Houston that after thanksgiving plays only christmas music until the new year and they said last year the hippo song was the most requested!

Yay! That means I'll be hearing a lot more of it!

I love this post! I've been looking for more songs to add to my iPod Christmas list. I completely forgot about this little gem. Thanks.

Glad to see you finally got your hippo. (I'm still waiting for my e-z-bake oven.)

Jessica -- You are not alone!! Yes, the "rhinocerousouses" is the best part. :)

Summer -- LOL! A little picky about your holiday music, eh?

Tara -- It's a rambling kind of season, I think. And I survived yesterday's venture. Have to go out again today, but I'm going to let it warm up a bit first. Brrr!

Bess -- What?! You never heard it? Horrors! What a deprived childhood you had. ;) And glad your prize got there okay. :)

Teri Anne -- LOL! Yes, online shopping is a real life saver. But some things I just have to SEE before I buy.

Candyland -- LOL! Beware. It's a cultivated innnocence. ;)

Samantha -- Oops. Sorry! (Not really. *laughs maniacally*)

Jeffe -- Ha! Like I said. Grows on you. *evil grin*

Demery -- You're welcome. May you get your "hippopotamus" someday, whatever it may be. :)

Courtney -- Aw, thanks, bb. :)

Jules -- All right! Another hippo lover. Hippo Lovers of the World Unite!

Abby -- Oh, well. There's just no accounting for taste... ;)

Shannon -- Don't give up on the e-z-bake oven! You'll get it someday. :)

I had never heard this song before last year, but I fell in LOVE with it after that first fateful exposure. I mean, she's really thought the whole thing through! She deserves that hippo!
