Whew! You may have heard about the derecho that hit the eastern part of the country.
Don't know what a derecho is? Neither did I until we got hit by one.
A derecho is basically a "land hurricane" -- a very bad windstorm that covers hundreds of miles, and leaves a path of destruction in its wake. No, I'd never heard of it, either. Click here if you're dying to learn more about it.
Well, that damn derecho did a number on DC and its environs. We were fortunate in that we didn't lose power ourselves, so we had air conditioning (thank goodness!), but we were without internet and phones for way too long.
No interwebz? Ugh! The horror!
Not all of our extended family was as lucky, so we've had refugees from the storm. Actually, it turned into kind of a house party, which was fun.
Anyhow, that's my excuse for not having a real post today. You can, however, find me over at Jessica Lemmon's Sm:)e,Feel Good blog, being a smartass there instead of here.
Hope you'll stop by there and say hi! :)

Ugh! I've never heard of it before either--glad you kept your power! Makes the storm so much easier to bear.
derecho? this is the new thing i've learned today! thanks for that. and also, glad to hear you're all okay!
Never heard that term before! The things we learn on Linda's blog! Heading over to Jessica's place...
I've been watching the DC blowout at arms length...via the telly - not a pretty picture.
Seems like Mother Nature is going through "the pause" and not being nice about it!
And...love, love, love your new blog look...dare I say it's my fav! *grin* (namely because I have it too!)
Cheers, Jenny
I've only seen this word once before, when a friend posted pictures of one on Facebook. (It was out near Las Vegas, where one can assume they are more common than in D.C.)
Thanks for this. I have a weird love of strange storms. Sorry you had to experience it first hand, though.
I'm following Jessica now so I'll see you there.
Glad you're OK. I'm running late today, but I'll zip over.
Huh. Had never heard of that before, either. Glad you're all okay.
That little puppy passed through here on it's way to the coast. 80 mph stright line winds. Lots of homes here still without power.
I never heard of this term before, either, until I saw it in the newspaper the other day. Mother Nature doesn't have enough tools in her armory... she has to come up with a NEW one? Well, not new, maybe, but new to most of us. Hope she puts this one back on the shelf.
Glad you came through it okay. I was thinking about you DC folks when I learned my new word du jour from the paper. :-)
Here in Greater Cincinnati, we got hit with a ten-second gust that trashed a significant portion of the state...trees, power lines, all kinds of stuff...CRAZY!
A few years ago, we got hit with a hurricane (it didn't have a fancy name, then, except "Ike")...but THAT puppy knocked out our power for a week. After two days I was over the adventure of living like a pioneer. I'll stay back in the future, thank you very much!
Glad you are okay!
I guess that just about does for an excuse.
Good luck to your region on the rebuild.
